Undoubtedly there are a lot of amusements in Japan but one simply should not miss the like-no-other onsen (hot spring) experience.
When visiting Oda, Sanbe Onsen is definitely recommended. The brownish color of the hot spring might not be the most appealing but it conveys well the high mineral content: the iron content, which oxidizes and turn the water into brownish color, helps warming up the body well; While the high sodium content moisturizes the skin and keep the body warm for a fairly long period of time.
Today we started the day at Sanbe Onsen and it was invigorating! There is a wide variety of open air bathtubs with temperature ranging from around 30°C (original temperature as the source in winter time) to around 40°C. It might be lukewarm for Japanese but probably a good temperature to begin with for foreigners who experience hot spring for the first time. The different shapes and materials of the bathtubs are also fun to explore.
Sanbe Sou also offers accommodation and meals. We concluded our little retreat with a nice lunch in the restaurant, returning with a warm body and stomach
Located in the highlands of Mt. Sanbe, the area is also famous for star viewing. Imagine enjoying the hot spring under a starry sky! Definitely on my to-do list in Shimane!
